I was fortunate to grow up in the beautiful country of South Africa. My childhood was spent in Johannesburg, a city made famous by gold, but what I most loved were the thunder storms. Almost every summer afternoon, storm clouds gather, black and heavy. You can smell the ozone in the air as you run for shelter before the rain comes pelting down. At first there are just a few drops, big and fat, splatting one by one on the ground, before they began to fall faster and faster. Lightening zigzags through the sky, and as children, we would count the seconds until we heard the thunder. The rain gathers in pools and runs in rivers down the road, sweeping along anything in it’s path, and then it … stops. Just like that, it is done. The clouds part, the sun comes out, and within minutes the water is steaming off the ground, and you heading back outside as though nothing even happened!
Since then I’ve lived under Table Mountain in Cape Town, spent a chapter in England, and finally rooted my family in Alberta, Canada, at the edge of the Rockies. Wherever I’ve gone, books have been home: fairies and princes as a child, then worlds of my own as an adult.
I published my first novel, Bound by a Dragon, not knowing if anyone would read it. Readers did—and asked for more. That kindness still humbles me.
What I write about (beneath the dragons and crowns)
-
Love that costs something. Quiet bravery, second chances, vows that hold when everything breaks.
-
Light and dark in balance. Mercy alongside power. Shadow that doesn’t have to be the enemy.
-
Home and belonging. Found family, rooted places, and the long way back to yourself.
When I’m not writing
I’m probably making coffee (a lot of it), walking in the woods, or scheming new recipes for my community café. I still hoard notebooks, play the piano when no one’s listening, and garden during the brief Canadian summers—then read by the fire through the cold winter months.
